Selection

Based on the documents, a selection committee will invite the best applicants to a 15 to 20 minutes interview, by video conference or Skype (April 13-20, 2015). Selection criteria will be assessed according to the following scheme:


  • Master or equivalent degree, grade (30 %)
  • Master or equivalent degree, relevance of topic (10 %)
  • Quality and relevance of dissertation proposal (30 %)
  • English language skills (go/no-go criterion)
  • Past academic experience and achievements (10 %)
  • Motivation for the program (10 %)
  • Formal aspects of application (10 %)

Based on these results, the best candidates will be invited to a selection workshop in Lisbon (invitations to be sent until April 30, 2015).


Selection workshop (Lisbon, June 8-9, 2015):

At the selection workshop, candidates present their PhD proposal, and will be interviewed by the selection committee. The criteria are as follows: Presentation of dissertation proposal (35 %), Interview (55 %), Rhetorical skill and English language (10 %).


The final selection result will be weighed 50:50 by the pre-selection result and the result of the selection workshop. If two candidates are equal, we will aim to achieve gender balance.


The GEO-C Consortium will support travel costs for invited candidates of up to


  • 1.000 € for residents of US/Canada
  • 1.500 € for other non-EU residents
  • 400 € for EU residents
  • 100 € national (PT) residents
  • Reimbursement by bank transfer – which will take 2-4 weeks
  • Funds will also be provided to cover the costs of up to two nights of accommodation to be organized by UNL.
